What is Advanced Placement (AP)?
Advanced Placement courses offer university-level content to students at the grade 12 level. Students in AP and pre-AP study topics in greater depth, enhancing their intellectual development.
What is Pre Advanced Placement (Pre AP)?
Students who are high achievers (average above 80%) in English, Geography, Mathematics and/or Science currently enrolled in grade 8 and grade 9 can enroll in pre-AP courses in September 2013. Pre-AP students can enrol in separate academic courses of their choice (Geography, History, English, Math, and/or Science). These courses will help prepare students for the Grade 12 Advanced Placement courses.
Alignment with the Ontario Curriculum
The AP curriculum and the Ontario High School curriculum overlap to a very large extent. Students in Pre AP courses complete Academic (9/10) or University (11/12) curriculum with appropriate extensions designed to prepare the student for writing the AP exams. The examination for these students will parallel the structure and outcomes of the regular Academic or University Level course and will reflect the differentiated content of the Pre AP/AP course
AP recognized worldwide
Because AP courses include university material, students may achieve advanced academic standing or equivalent credits at many universities in Canada, the United States, and overseas. Click here to see a list Canadian Universities. The AP program acts as an international yardstick against which students can measure their educational progress. AP courses and exams are administered by the American College Board.
The AP Exam
At the conclusion of a grade 12 Advanced Placement course students must write an exam. The exam is created by and graded by university professors and experienced AP teachers worldwide. All exams are written at Assumption.
Advantages of AP
Former AP students speak of their easy transition from high school to university owing to the strong academic skills, knowledge, and academic confidence gained through participation in the AP program. Students do not have to write the AP examination; it is an option. The main objective of the course is to provide students with an excellent preparation for University
